If clothes, as Shakespeare contended, make the man, then shoes certainly do make the dancer.
Dance shoes come in all different styles and colours and as a new dancer it might all seem a little confusing. The most important distinction is between ballroom and latin shoes. Ballroom shoes typically have closed toes and lower heels to give stability whilst latin shoes may have open toes and higher heels to emphasize toe leads and hip movements.
If you are only wishing to purchase one pair of shoes we recommend that you go for a latin pair as these can more easily used for ballroom dancing than the other way around.
